Important accuracy note: Claims such as a guaranteed 2–3 GB RAM reduction, universal FPS gains, or every hidden feature being available on every PC are not established as universal benefits. Features may depend on your build, hardware, edition, policy settings and staged rollout. Experimental feature IDs can change or stop working.

1. Performance Improvements and File Explorer

01

File Explorer responsiveness

Documented improvements

Microsoft documents improvements intended to make File Explorer Home launch faster and feel more responsive. Other usability changes include retaining certain folder view and sort preferences when applications open locations such as Downloads or Documents.

What you may notice

  • More responsive navigation in supported configurations.
  • Improved continuity of folder view and sort preferences.
  • Additional archive-format support in File Explorer.
  • More useful file previews and actions in supported experiences.

Actual performance depends on storage speed, background applications, indexing, available memory, system configuration and installed updates. Do not assume every device will show the same speed improvement.

02

Does Windows 11 26H2 use 2–3 GB less RAM?

Not a universal guarantee

Some online comparisons claim large reductions in idle memory usage. However, RAM consumption changes with startup applications, drivers, security software, Windows services, cached memory and the test method. A specific 25H2-versus-26H2 figure should be treated as a benchmark result for that particular test—not a guaranteed improvement.

How to compare memory usage fairly

  1. Use the same PC and the same installed applications.
  2. Install the latest updates on both test configurations.
  3. Keep startup applications and background tasks consistent.
  4. Restart and wait for startup activity to settle.
  5. Record memory usage in Task Manager under similar conditions.
  6. Repeat the test and compare several readings.

Windows also uses available memory for caching. Higher memory usage by itself does not necessarily mean that Windows is slower.

03

Gaming and overall system responsiveness

Measure on your hardware

Monthly Windows updates can improve reliability and responsiveness, but a universal gaming FPS boost is not guaranteed by the 26H2 version label alone.

To compare gaming performance, use the same game version, graphics settings, display resolution, power profile and driver version. Record average FPS and frame-time consistency across multiple runs.

04

Better search results and file previews

Documented

Windows Search has been receiving improvements to help users identify applications, files, settings, web results and Microsoft Store suggestions more easily. Supported experiences can preview results without requiring the user to open each item.

Useful improvements include

  • Better handling of typos and partial application names.
  • Clearer identification of result types.
  • File previews in supported search experiences.
  • Indexing controls for frequently used folders.

Where to look: Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows. Available options can vary by Windows build and account configuration.

3. Start Menu Customization

05

A more flexible Start menu

Documented changes

The updated Start menu experience includes a scrollable All section, different app views and layout options. Its responsive layout can adapt to the display and the available screen space.

Options to explore

  • Switch between supported app-list views.
  • Adjust available Start menu layout options.
  • Show or hide supported sections such as Pinned and Recent.
  • Use a layout suited to your screen size and workflow.

Open: Settings → Personalization → Start. The exact controls depend on the installed build and rollout status.

4. Taskbar Position and Size

06

More taskbar layout options

Documented for 26H2

Microsoft documents additional taskbar customization in Windows 11 26H2, including positioning the taskbar at the bottom, top, left or right, and choosing a smaller taskbar option where supported.

These options can be useful for ultrawide displays, vertical monitors and users who prefer a layout similar to earlier Windows versions.

Where to look: Settings → Personalization → Taskbar. If an option is missing, verify your Windows build and current feature availability before attempting registry modifications or third-party utilities.

5. Multi-App Camera Access

07

Allow compatible apps to share camera access

Documented capability

Multi-App Camera is designed to let multiple applications access a camera stream at the same time in supported configurations. This may help specific accessibility, support, streaming or conferencing workflows.

Microsoft documents administrative configuration for Multi-App Camera and Basic Camera modes. The feature is not necessarily exposed as the same consumer Settings toggle on every PC.

Tip: Check your camera driver, Windows build and available Group Policy settings. Test the feature with your actual conferencing and recording applications.

6. Smart App Control: Turning It On or Off

08

More flexible Smart App Control management

Documented

Smart App Control helps block untrusted or potentially harmful applications. Microsoft documents the ability to turn Smart App Control on or off without requiring a clean installation of Windows in supported releases.

Where to check: Open Windows Security and look for the Smart App Control settings under App & browser control.

Smart App Control affects which applications can run. Understand the security trade-off before changing it, especially on a work-managed computer. Options may be controlled by your organization.

7. Sysmon Is Built into Windows

09

System monitoring for security investigations

Documented

System Monitor, commonly known as Sysmon, is integrated into Windows. It can capture system events used for threat detection and investigation. Events can be written to Windows Event Log and consumed by compatible security tools.

Why administrators may care

  • Useful telemetry for security investigations.
  • Configurable event collection.
  • Integration with Windows event-log workflows.
  • Potential value for endpoint monitoring and threat hunting.

Built-in Sysmon is off by default. It is an advanced security feature, not a general-purpose performance monitor.

Read Microsoft's Windows 11 26H2 documentation for the current enablement and configuration procedure.

8. Administrator Protection and Just-in-Time Privileges

10

Reduce unnecessary administrator privilege

Documented

Administrator Protection is designed to reduce the risks associated with persistent administrator rights. It uses just-in-time privileges for administrative tasks and profile separation to help protect against privilege-escalation attacks.

The feature is off by default and can be enabled through supported enterprise management methods such as Microsoft Intune or Group Policy. Availability and configuration should be checked against Microsoft's current guidance.

This is particularly relevant for IT administrators, managed endpoints and organizations applying least-privilege security principles.

9. Post-Quantum Cryptography APIs

11

ML-KEM and ML-DSA support

Documented API support

Windows adds API support for post-quantum cryptography algorithms standardized by NIST. Two important algorithms are:

  • ML-KEM: a key-encapsulation mechanism used to establish shared cryptographic secrets.
  • ML-DSA: a digital-signature algorithm used to sign and verify data.

These standards are intended to improve resilience against future cryptographic threats associated with sufficiently capable quantum computers. Their presence in Windows APIs does not mean every application automatically uses post-quantum cryptography.

Developers must use supported APIs and compatible protocols correctly. See Microsoft's official 26H2 documentation for implementation details.

10. Task Manager NPU Monitoring

12

Monitor Neural Processing Unit activity

Hardware-dependent

Task Manager provides additional visibility into NPU usage on supported systems. Optional NPU-related columns can appear in process views, and compatible neural engines may be shown on the Performance page.

Who benefits?

  • Users running supported AI workloads.
  • Developers testing applications that use an NPU.
  • Administrators troubleshooting hardware acceleration.

NPU telemetry requires suitable hardware and driver support. A PC without a supported NPU will not gain NPU monitoring simply by installing the update.

11. More Useful Changes to Explore

Windows Update

Windows continues to improve update delivery and restart behavior. The exact pause limits and controls depend on the Windows edition, policies and current build.

Bluetooth and audio

Documented improvements include Bluetooth reliability, call behavior, microphone mute synchronization and reconnection after hibernation in supported configurations.

Recovery and deployment

Eligible PCs running 24H2 or 25H2 can receive 26H2 through an enablement package, usually with a relatively quick installation.

File Explorer archive support

Additional archive formats and usability enhancements help improve file management. Check the official documentation for the supported formats and build requirements.

12. Hidden and Experimental Features

Proceed carefully: Feature IDs are internal development or rollout identifiers, not permanent public APIs. A ViVeTool command does not guarantee a feature will work, and enabling experimental features can cause instability. Do not run IDs copied from unverified posts on a production PC.

What about the feature IDs circulating online?

IDs such as 60730253, 62915050, 62141177, 27829265 and 61457898 have been associated with claims about individual Windows features. These identifiers should be treated as build-dependent and unverified unless confirmed by reliable reporting or tested on the exact Windows build.

A feature ID alone does not prove that a feature is released, supported, safe to enable or available to all users.

Is “Race to Sleep” a confirmed Windows 11 26H2 feature?

Not verified as a 26H2 feature

“Race to sleep” is a general power-management concept: a processor may complete work quickly at a higher performance state and then return to a lower-power state. That general concept does not establish that a new, hidden Windows 11 26H2 profile is responsible for a specific RAM reduction or performance increase.

Avoid presenting this explanation as a confirmed internal Windows implementation without a reliable technical source.

Is background File Explorer pre-launch officially available?

Check the exact policy

File Explorer responsiveness improvements are documented, but a specific Group Policy name or a universal pre-launch mechanism should be verified against the policy templates installed on your build. Do not assume a policy exists just because its name appears in a third-party feature list.

Emoji, AutoPlay, mouse crosshairs and other interface changes

Build-dependent

Interface changes may appear in Insider builds, staged rollouts or feature experiments before they are available to all users. Before publishing an exact Settings path, test it on the target build and include a screenshot or a Microsoft reference if possible.

13. How to Use ViVeTool Safely

ViVeTool is a third-party utility used to inspect or change certain Windows feature flags. It is not an official Microsoft feature-management interface, and enabling a flag does not guarantee that the corresponding feature is complete or compatible with your system.

  1. Check your Windows build. Open Settings → System → About, or run winver.
  2. Back up important data. Create a restore point where available and keep a recovery plan.
  3. Use the official project source. Visit the ViVeTool GitHub repository
